Roy Swanson
Baseball, Class of 2006
Roy Swanson established himself as one of Warren County’s most accomplished baseball players through an extraordinary career as a pitcher, hitter, coach, and softball competitor. His pitching talent emerged early, compiling a remarkable 130-8 record in Little League before earning a 15-4 record at Warren High School from 1965 to 1967. He also helped Warren Beverage win the 1966 Amateur Baseball State Championship and recorded a 25-4 pitching record while playing American Legion baseball for Corry, including two consecutive no-hitters.
Swanson continued his success at Penn State University, where he became a standout pitcher for the Nittany Lions. He recorded an impressive 2.05 ERA as a sophomore, threw a perfect game during his junior season, and finished his senior year in 1971 with a 1.25 ERA and a 6-3 record. He also batted .423 that season, earned the Joe Bedenk Award as team MVP, and was selected to the NCAA Regional All-Star Team. After signing a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers in 1972, Swanson continued playing competitive softball, participating in more than 2,700 games and winning numerous league titles and tournaments.
Beyond his playing career, Swanson coached Warren’s girls’ softball teams to outstanding success, including an undefeated 23-0 season as an assistant coach in 1991 and a 90-19 record as varsity head coach from 1992 to 1996, winning two TCAC championships. He later excelled with the Jamestown Oldtimers Baseball Team, finishing with an 8-0 pitching record and a batting average near .600. An accomplished golfer as well, Swanson has won two local club championships, demonstrating his exceptional athletic ability across multiple sports.
