John Imperial

Football, Class of 2008

-John played tackle and end, where he was particularly effective as a receiver. Standing 6 feet 1 inch tall, he led Warren High School in pass receptions and was known for his ability to track down ball carriers.

- John led the team in passes knocked down, tackles behind the line of scrimmage, and blocked punts. His signature move was stretching out and diving to block opposing punts.

- In 1943, John played nearly every down on offense, defense, and special teams as Warren finished with an impressive 7–3 record. His performance earned him Honorable Mention All-State recognition.

- After high school, John was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy, where he served aboard a ship for two years. He returned to Warren in 1946.

- John was recruited to join the revitalized Red Jackets in 1946. At 6 feet 1 inch and 210 pounds, he became a powerful presence and a favorite passing target, particularly for Hall of Fame quarterback Warnie “Lefty” Check. John was especially effective at catching passes in traffic despite heavy defensive coverage.

- The Red Jackets finished 1946 with an 8–2–1 record. In 1947, they won ten consecutive games and competed for the Western Pennsylvania professional championship in Erie Stadium before 8,500 spectators. John recalled earning $75 for his performance in that championship game, his highest payday.

- Throughout his Red Jackets career, John remained a defensive leader in blocked punts, tackling, and kick coverage. Offensively, he shared top receiving and scoring honors with Hall of Fame player Paul Pollack.

- In 2001, John was selected for the Team of the Century as the best tight end in the first 100 years of Warren Dragon football.
