Don Mohney
Don Mohney, a Kinzua native, was one of the most outstanding all-around athletes in Warren High School football history. Playing left halfback and safety from 1953 to 1955, Mohney excelled at running, passing, kicking, and punting. In 1955, he helped lead the Dragons to their first undefeated, untied season since 1928, scoring 106 points and 14 touchdowns. His remarkable performances earned him the nickname “Warren’s Mr. Football” and recognition as a first-team All-Section, All-Pennsylvania, and National High School All-American selection.
Following high school, Mohney attended Greenbriar Military School in West Virginia on an athletic scholarship, where he helped lead the team to an undefeated season and earned team MVP honors after rushing for 260 yards in one game. He later played football at Mount Union College and for the 82nd Airborne football team, where his 46-yard field goal secured a victory in the 1959 Airborne Bowl national championship game. For his performance, he received a gold football from Major General William Westmoreland. Mohney also excelled in baseball, pitching for Kane’s American Legion team and later playing for Warren Beverage, which won the 1963 state championship. His achievements across multiple sports established him as one of Warren County’s most exceptional athletes.
