R. Mark Evans
Soccer, Coaching, Class of 1996
Mark Evans has dedicated a lifetime to soccer as a player, coach, referee, and community leader. His athletic career began at Bradfield College, a private boarding school in England, where he played rugby, football (soccer), field hockey, and cricket. He captained the undefeated rugby team in 1974, earned his colours in football and field hockey, served as field hockey vice-captain, and toured Holland with the field hockey team. In 1974, he also attended a Football Association summer camp and was selected to play against the under-18 youth teams of Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers.
After moving to the United States in 1976, Evans became a driving force in developing soccer throughout Warren County. He volunteered as a YMCA indoor soccer coach for more than two decades, established the Warren YMCA youth outdoor soccer program in 1992, and helped develop numerous youth teams and leagues. A founding member of the Interstate Soccer Association in 1979, he served as president and treasurer and played on Warren's 1985 league championship team. He also helped establish the Kinzua Soccer Club and served as president of both that organization and the Soccer Association of Warren County. His efforts helped create the foundation for boys' and girls' soccer programs at Warren Area High School and Eisenhower.
From 1996 through 2009, Evans coached Warren Area High School boys' soccer, compiling an outstanding record of 214 wins, 55 losses, and 11 ties. His teams captured seven Tri-County Athletic Conference championships, one Northwest Conference championship, and five regional championships, finishing as league champions in 13 of his 14 years of involvement with the program. His teams also reached District 10 championship games and the PIAA state playoffs.
Evans earned his PIAA referee qualification in 1988 and officiated for 25 years, including district playoff games and District 10 finals in District 9. He qualified as a FIFA referee in 1995 and earned a D-level coaching license. His athletic pursuits also included indoor league soccer for 30 years and participation in two Kinzua Reservoir triathlons, where his teams won their age group.
In 1995, Evans initiated the annual soccer alumni game, bringing former players together with current high school athletes in the enduring tradition known as the “Old Boys vs. Young Guns.” His decades of volunteer service, leadership, and dedication to developing young athletes have left a lasting mark on Warren County sports. His legacy extends beyond championships to the programs he established, the players he mentored, and the opportunities he created for generations of soccer players.
