Mike played football for Sheffield High School from 1923-27. On Sundays while still in high school, Cashmere played semiprofessional football as quarterback and tackle for the Johnsonburg Rockets, Kane Merchants, and Roystone Bulldogs. He was also a catcher for baseball teams in Ludlow, Kane, and Sheffield. In 1944, he volunteered to coach football at Sheffield High School to prevent the program from being dropped. Cashmere coached All-American Steve Eisenhauer and had 14 consecutive wins in 1946-47. Even at 90 years old, Mike still maintained an active interest in local sports.
