John "Nonny" Castagnino

Baseball, Class of 2006

John “Nonny” Castagnino was a lifelong athlete, coach, and mentor who made a lasting impact on Warren’s sports community. He was the starting quarterback and defensive safety for the 1948 Warren Dragons football team, which finished with an 8-2 record. He also excelled in basketball, helping the Dragons win Section II, District 10, and Northwestern Pennsylvania titles. However, baseball was his greatest passion. As a talented third baseman and power hitter, he batted nearly .400 during his career and played for the Ludlow Wildcats, the U.S. Army baseball team during the Korean War, and a semi-professional team in Virginia.

After returning to Warren, Castagnino played and coached championship-winning softball teams while dedicating himself to coaching youth basketball and baseball. He led several grade-school teams, including McClintock and St. Joseph’s, to championships and helped develop future athletes and coaches. Those he coached remembered him for balancing a serious commitment to improvement with fun, sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork. Later in life, he continued sharing his love of athletics by mentoring and supporting his four grandchildren in their sporting pursuits. Castagnino’s legacy extended far beyond his athletic accomplishments, as he became a respected role model who influenced generations of young athletes.
