Paul Steinkamp

Swim Coach, Class of 1997

Though Paul was active in basketball, wrestling, boxing, and gymnastics, his true passion was swimming. In 1926 at the age of 9, Paul completed the Chautauqua Lake Marathon, representing the Warren YMCA, swimming the entire width of the lake. He taught swimming and coached teams at the YMCA for many years, including champion swimmer and WCSHOF inductee Pat Madden. He spent years teaching and directing swim programs for children with special needs at Chief Cornplanter. He also taught swimming and lifesaving for the American Red Cross and for the Boy Scouts. Paul's participation and service spanned six decades, until his death in 1979.
