Fran Zolko

Bowling, Class of 2010

Frannie (Fran) Zolko has enjoyed an extraordinary bowling career spanning more than six decades, establishing herself as one of Warren County’s most accomplished and dedicated bowlers. A longtime resident of Youngsville, formerly of Torpedo and Pittsfield, Fran began bowling in 1948 at the encouragement of her late husband, John Zolko. She joined a women’s league at Penn Bowling Lanes in Warren in 1949 and began competing in the Youngsville bowling community in 1952. Over the years, she remained a fixture in the Youngsville Ladies Bowling League and participated in numerous local, state, and national tournaments.

Her accomplishments include competing in the Women’s International Bowling Congress national tournaments in Rochester, New York, in 1967 and Buffalo, New York, in 1997. Fran recorded a remarkable high game of 256 and a three-game scratch series of 632, along with three scratch series of 600 or higher. Her competitive spirit remained strong well into her later years: at age 83, she rolled a 606 scratch series, and at age 89, she recorded a 243 single game. From 1993 through 2008, her annual single-game average ranged from 150 to 164, demonstrating her remarkable consistency and longevity in the sport.

Fran’s achievements earned her statewide recognition in 2009, when she received the Pennsylvania State Women’s Bowling Association’s Outstanding Senior Woman Bowler award. She remains the only bowler from Warren County to receive this distinction. Throughout her career, she has accumulated numerous trophies and awards while competing in leagues, charity events, and tournaments across Pennsylvania and beyond. Even after more than 60 years in the sport, Fran has continued bowling in the Youngsville Ladies League, Senior Sunshine League, and Brokenstraw Couples League, while regularly substituting in other leagues.

Yet her legacy extends beyond her scores and awards. Known for her positive attitude, encouragement, and dedication, she has inspired bowlers of all ages and helped strengthen the local bowling community. Fran approaches the sport with humility, emphasizing enjoyment, friendship, and the opportunity to improve from one week to the next. Her remarkable longevity, competitive accomplishments, and commitment to sportsmanship make her an outstanding representative of Warren County athletics and a role model for generations of bowlers.
